Blairgowrie and Rattray is home to a thriving community of artists and creators, many of whom have chosen to base their businesses in the town.

One shining example of this is the hugely talented silversmith Sarah Cave who designs and makes a range of contemporary silverware and jewellery at her studio space and shop on Blairgowrie High Street.

Sarah believes that we should be surrounded by objects that are well designed, well made and pleasing to the eye, and that traditional techniques and practices should be supported.

She has been making silverware since leaving art college in 1995, and worked for many years at the renowned luxury jewellers Hamilton and Inches in Edinburgh.

Now a flourishing independent business owner, Sarah first set up a studio in her home in Blairgowrie before moving to the High Street premises as her venture grew.

Most of her silverware is ‘hand raised’ – a traditional technique using basic hand tools. She works a flat sheet of silver over steel tools or ‘stakes’ using a raising hammer to produce a form, each one being unique.

Everything is made in the High Street studio using recycled silver, and you can pop into the shop and see Sarah at work making the items that she sells and the tools of the trade, gaining an insight into the techniques and work that goes into creating bespoke, handmade pieces of jewellery and silverware.

Sarah can also tell you a little about where she gets her inspiration from, and how she often works with customers on specially commissioned pieces.

And of course, you can also browse the beautiful pieces she has designed and created in the shop – and perhaps even make a purchase!

Sarah Cave Silversmith is based at 37 High Street, Blairgowrie and is open 10am to 4pm, Wednesdays to Saturdays.
